Why Are Regular Cleanings So Important?
If you are someone who brushes your teeth at least twice a day along with flossing each night, you may wonder why you need to come in every six months to have a professional cleaning done.
Even if you have the best toothbrush and you are using the right techniques, you could be missing some of the areas around your gum line and teeth. This may not be a reflection on you, but rather that your teeth are just not uniform. It could also be and it is hard to reach every single surface in your mouth. Many patients will find this is true if they have teeth that are crowded, have some gaps or are slightly crooked.
Over time, there can be plaque that is left behind in small areas that will eventually harden into tartar. The tarter that develops cannot be removed simply by using a toothbrush. Instead, professional instruments will be required to remove it. If such tarter is not taken away in a timely fashion, there can be cavities or gum disease that begins to develop.
It is recommended by the American Dental Association that every patient has a professional cleaning performed every six months. Our staff agrees with this recommendation, and there could be some cases where it will be appropriate for cleanings to take place more often. This could be true if you have missed a couple of cleanings and there is a great deal of tartar that is built up, or if you are being treated for gum disease. Whenever we feel that it would benefit you to have more frequent cleanings, we will be happy to discuss your options.
What Takes Place During A Regular Dental Cleaning?
We will usually begin the cleaning process by knocking pieces of tartar away from your teeth simply by using an ultrasonic instrument. The hygienist will also rinse away any bits of tartar using water to keep the area at the right temperature. You may be familiar with the sound of whistling that comes from this instrument; as it is one of the most distinctive noises that people recognize in a dental office.
The next step will be the hygienist going over your teeth using fine, handheld tools that will look for the smaller bits of tartar that were missed while using the ultrasonic instrument. By using gentle pressure, the hygienist removes these deposits from the surface of the teeth and just below the gumline.
After all of the tartar and plaque has been removed successfully, we will polish your teeth using a device that has a small rubber head along with a gritty paste. The grit that is in the paste works to polish your teeth and take away most stains so that the result is bright, shiny and smooth, along with the amazing feeling you get as you run your tongue over the surface.
During this time, the hygienist will also go over the home care habits that you should be using after you leave your appointment. You can discuss daily dental hygiene, and you will be given suggestions on the way out so that you can improve your technique and routine. If you’d like to have your teeth whitened after your cleaning, please let us know.
Is it about time that you have a dental cleaning? You can call us today to schedule an appointment, even if it has been a while. There is no better time than right now to enjoy a fresh start.
